Tutorial Presentations

DIGITAL DOCUMENTS
Leslie and Michelle presented on digital documents and showed how easy it was to create a professional and appropriate invitation. We began using a Word document but before I knew it, we had added colourful borders, inserted pictures found from the web and changed the text to suit the mood of the event we were creating the invitation for. A simple yet effective task that would be great for teaching students about various functions of Word.

GOING ONLINE
Colin and Lee gave us an overview of WordPress as an example of going online. I’m feeling a lot more comfortable with using WordPress to complete the assessment component of ICT. Adding basic media seems straightforward which makes it easy to share documents and photos with others all around the world. Technology sure has come a long way- who would have thought it would be so cheap and easy to communicate with the online community??

eBOOKS
Lizzie and Pat introduced the tutorial class to eBooks. I gathered from the class that an eBook is an electronic book that can be read on a computer. They generally contain links to secondary content which add to the reading of the digital story. I can’t imagine eBooks will ever take over paper books but there are some advantages to them. To start with I like the idea of having a library in a small space- computer memory storage takes very little physical space which makes the books very portable and is also good for our rainforests. The interactivity of eBooks is probably the highlight for me. Being able to read a book and have sounds/ sound effects adds to the entertainment. Being able to have ready found secondary data to accompany your reading is amazing!

SIMULATION AND MODELING
Renee and Simone presented on simulation and modeling. I didn’t have much idea about either of these things let alone what the difference between the two were. Quoted from their presentation

‘Modeling is a representation of a real event or concept which can have an interaction element much like simulation. Simulation, however, is an imitation of real or fictitious events that you must construct information and understanding from, rather than have all the facts presented to you as in modeling. Simulation requires an element of role play. Role-pla, in this sense, is taking the persona of a character electronic.’

This was a great clarification to start with as I would have had no idea otherwise. The task was very relevant to teaching primary students as it involved creating a model of a lifecycle for either a frog or a butterfly. I could really see students absorbing so much more in a lesson where they have to put all the facts together to create a great looking product. I hope I can use this idea in the classroom sometime soon!
